Newman University Integrates AI Planning Tool into New Pathmaker Degree Program

Newman University integrates AI planning tool into new Pathmaker program, offering a 3-year bachelor's degree with project-based learning and customized degree paths for $19,500 annually, launching Fall 2025.

-- Newman University has developed Pathmaker, a new academic program launching in Fall 2025. This initiative enables students to earn a bachelor's degree in three years, with an option for a master's degree in a fourth year. The program features a $19,500 annual flat rate tuition that includes fall, spring, and summer terms.

Pathmaker substitutes conventional general education requirements with project-based learning during summer sessions. Students work on practical projects under the guidance of faculty teams, building skills in critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving. This structure maintains the standard 120 credit hours while reducing the time to graduation.

Students can tailor their academic paths using PathMaker GPT, an AI tool programmed with regional job market data and university course offerings. This technology helps create personalized degree plans that students refine with advisors and industry professionals to ensure career relevance.

"Pathmaker responds to students' concerns about college costs, time commitment, and career relevance," said Alden Stout, Vice President of Academic Affairs at Newman University. "The system of higher education that exists now wasn't built for today's students. It was built for a time long ago."

The curriculum incorporates internships through partnerships with local organizations. After completing their three-year bachelor's degree, graduates can immediately enter the workforce or pursue a master's degree in fields such as business administration, data science, social work, or biomedicine.

Shannon Johnston, Assistant Professor of Art and one of the faculty members leading the Pathmaker team, noted that the program gives students the opportunity to design their own majors based on their individual interests and career goals. "You get to work on achieving your general education learning outcomes through project-based learning," Johnston explained.

The program's summer projects replace traditional coursework with real-world experiences. In one example discussed by Stout, students might create an accessible playground feature for children with disabilities, requiring them to conduct field research, communicate with stakeholders, apply design principles, and use quantitative reasoning skills.

Pathmaker students will form cohorts, working in teams that mirror professional environments. This collaborative approach prepares them for workplace dynamics while building a supportive learning community. The program accommodates students with prior credits from advanced placement courses or associate degrees, making it adaptable to various educational backgrounds.
